A VOICE FOR THE SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN

When I gave birth to Abryl, little did I know that my entire life will be totally changed. Being born with down syndrome was one side of the story while the emotional, mental, physical and financial strain on myself and my family was another. Two years of raising our son Abryl opened my eyes to the realities and constraints of raising a child with an intellectual disability. The constant hospital visits and adjusting to the development challenges made us acutely aware of the deficiency of such services in Uganda. Moreover, the mental health and emotional well-being as well as the livelihoods of caregivers is of essence in promoting the performance of the children. Communities provide a holistic growth environment for the children hence we integrate a centre based and community based rehabilitation approaches. We uphold the rights of children with special needs and ensure that caregivers are supported in copying with raising children with special needs, through psychosocial support and community based rehabilitation.” Rosemary Nambooze, Executive Director
